Reapers and whatnot can usually read souls, so they can choose to be asses and not help them pass and just leave them in place OR keep them themselves in flasks to use as night stands, or offer it to a soul consuming beast. Or destroying the soul. 

It's honestly a matter of what kind of reaper comes pick you up. XD
