What happened (as is implied in the middle section of the Mummers post) is Lothren discovered the cell, knocked out the mage, and left. He went upstairs, called out for Juna, and then went to return downstairs. What Gawain does was meant to fit in the brief window that Lothren had gone.

No actual vanishing, just a quick departure. Perhaps bad word choice on my part.
