[@Viciousmarrow] Thank you for inadvertently solving my question! :P And yeah, people dying can fuck someone up, which is generally what I like doing to my characters (especially those who love the person more than life). Sure, romance disappears for awhile, but you can pull it off with a supportive character and some creative thinking.
