The character's justification is that he'd be much more useful to the Big E as a commander, so whatever he does to raise his own rank is really just serving the God-Emperor of Mankind and therefore cannot be wrong. I'm thinking that if and when we have some encounters with the ruinous powers, he'll see an opportunity for even more power (to serve the Big E, of course) and go after it full throttle. And on and on until eventually it becomes about power for its own sake and not to make sure he can serve the Imperium better.

If he lives that long, of course...
