The Flash, Fastest Man Alive Alignment: Lawful Good Affiliation: The Justice League of America History: Bartholomew Henry Allen was born to Nora and Henry Allen in the suburbs surrounding Central City, the larger of the so-called Gem Cities on the border of Missouri and Kansas. Barry grew up loving the old Invaders comic books that had been passed down from his grandfather from World War II. He idolized Captain America, the Green Lantern, the Flash, and all the rest. His biggest hero, though, was his father. Henry worked as a detective with the Central City police force and was close with his sergeant, Darryl Frye. One night, just after he had been tucked into bed, Barry heard a crash and a scream from downstairs. Curious, the young boy hopped out of bed and wandered over to the railing by the stairs. There, he saw a flash of yellow circling his mother. Before he could realize what was happening, the flash was gone, and Nora Allen was lying in a puddle of blood on the ground. The police came and arrested Henry for the murder of his wife. Sergeant Frye -- one of Henry's few supporters -- took in Barry and became his legal guardian. Barry knew his father was innocent, but he couldn't prove it. The incident would inspire him to study forensic science. After graduating with honors from Central City University, Barry was appointed by Darryl Frye -- now Captain in the CCPD -- to the Crime Lab. There, he worked tirelessly to solve crimes and exonerate innocent victims. While working late one night during a thunderstorm, Barry was struck by a bolt of lightning while trying to clean up a chemical spill. The resulting reaction witnessed the birth of the Speed Force, a quantum energy field which saturated Barry's cells. Barry was amazed to find the next day that he had gained the powers of superspeed. He contacted one of Mercury Labs' top scientists, Harrison Wells, for help with his condition. Together, they developed a special suit which could withstand Barry's incredible speed. Though Wells was interested in Barry's speed purely as a scientific endeavor, Barry saw the possibility that he could use his newfound powers to effect real change in his city as a force for good. Adopting the moniker and styling of one of the famed Invaders, Barry became the Gem Cities' Scarlet Speedster, the Flash. His influence extended far beyond Central City and Keystone, though, and when the call came from a childhood hero to join the Justice League of America, Flash was quick to answer. He now shares his time between protecting his city and saving the world. Supporting Cast: Barry's closest friend in the world is Iris West; incidentally, he's also had a huge crush on her since their time in college together. His roommate is Vin Gonzales, an officer with the CCPD. As a matter of fact, most of Barry's friends come from work. His adoptive father, Darryl Frye, is a Captain and got Barry his job as a CSI tech. Barry's also close with James Forrest, the Crime Lab's DNA analyst, and has an ongoing flirtation with his coworker Carlie Cooper. Not everyone at the Crime Lab is Barry's biggest fan, though. His boss, Director David Singh, views Barry as a slacker and a nepotism hire. Barry's sole confidant in his superheroing endeavor is Harrison Wells, a respected if distant scientist at Mercury Labs. In the course of his activities as the Flash, Barry has also racked up quite the list of people who want him dead. Among them: Leonard Snart a.k.a. Captain Cold, Michelle Rory a.k.a. Heatwave, and Maxwell Dillon a.k.a. Electro. Ever more are coming out of the woodwork to challenge the Fastest Man Alive, and he'll need to always stay a step ahead if he wants to survive. How (if at all) does the New Frontier version of your character differ from the original?: As I said with my Spider-Man application, I'm less concerned with reinventing these characters -- after all, they've endured for decades, so clearly they don't need our help -- and more interested in getting to see team-ups, interactions, and fights that before now were not possible. There are some great Marvel villains who would make formidable foes for the Scarlet Speedster, and I intend to have fun with that. I also want to see Barry interacting with some of the Marvel heroes.
