As I believe it said in the post a very large amount of Ferrin's power was used to make that fireball.

But yeah, Ferrin took time to gather the energy, refine it, and enhance it. Its not something he could pull out of his hat, at the drop of said hat. On top of that, it was a sucker punch. The thing didn't see him coming and he had time to prepare. 

The number of hits Ferrin could throw like that, given time to prepare would number in the single digits.
