Well, the other slight issue with the Hunters is that, yes, they share the Legacy and they each follow it, but they tend to do it under different methodologies. Joel staunchly believed in being as much of a role model as possible, while Jay tended to stick to the "be a leader" aspect of things, hence why he now works with entire teams within law enforcement (at this point he has a hand-picked team of regular human law enforcement personnel from both HPD and FBI that give him the same kind of support Batman would get from the likes of Oracle and Commissioner Gordon). As such, because they adopted slightly differing ways of keeping to the Legacy, they're each sort of wanting Max to follow in their respective footsteps. What may look like the perfect American family to outsiders does in fact have its flaws and issues the public doesn't see. Just like real life celebrity families now that I think of it.
