He has a goodside, it's just not his default side. Unlike everyone else Tyrael isn't nearly as generous or philanthropic that he'd give things and services for free. So in comparisons to others, he's kinda a dick. Tyrael does have a weak spot for children which he doesn't show often since Lyn was the only child here, and everyone else of roughly 15 or older tends to get the gruff treatment from him.

Getting on Tyrael's goodside requires you being reliable (though not necessarily successful) and honest with him. If you've already wronged him (which is also easy to do), repentance  is required, but must also be done without prompt from him. If they don't bother trying to at least be aware of what they did to bother him, then they likely don't care to actually feel guilty about it. Rather twisted, but Tyrael isn't the most reasonable teacher you can mess with.
