Pardon me, [@Eklispe] , this is my fault because I could have made it more clear. Everything that Moritz saw was through the portal into the Void. The Portal showed a distorted reality like a mirror... Kind of an alternate universe, if that helps? But one where everything is seen as that own person's worst nightmare. For some people who looked through the portal they could see a family member murdered, or a giant spider heading towards them, or anything that would frighten and shock the individual. 
The portal is more of a window into that world, the events that transpired in it didn't occur in the world that the party is in.
