Beorn at first didn't appear to have heard the wizard speak at all, as he swung his axe in a wide circle over his head and cleaved the piece of firewood in half, though after he had done that he set it down and turned to look at them, leaning on the shaft. "Who are you? And what do you want?" his voice was deep and almost gravelly, as if it were more of a growl than anything else, and his eyes stared intently at them from beneath bushy eyebrows. Bofur took up a position at the window to keep watch over the proceedings, and tell the others if he thought it looked like Gandalf wanted them to go outside too. "Perhaps we shouldn't all rush out at once?" Kili suggested carefully. "It might startle him and I'd hate for him to turn back into that ghastly bear again!"
