Lyra looked back at Ba-Ba when he mildly chastised her. She stepped back and looked down. "I'm sorry," she mumbled, not even sure anyone heard her small voice. After the funny stranger left Lyra waited until Ba-Ba was done, shuffling her feet and biting her lip impatiently. She bounced up and down on the balls of her feet as she watched the girl servant take the pretty mirror away. Lyra wanted to whine but held it in. Ba-Ba didn't like it when she whined like a puppy. He said it made her seem like an animal. This confused her because all of the icky people in the court called her an animal when Ba-Ba wasn't around. So was she an animal or was she a people? But Ba-Ba got mad when she asked that and she didn't like to see him mad. He was scary when he was mad... Finally Ba-Ba turned his attention back to her. She smiled as bright as the summer sun. "Can we play hide and seek Ba-Ba? Please? Hide and seek outside!" Lyra's favorite game was hide and seek. Ba-Ba was better at it than the guards. They all got mad too quick and gave up too fast. They were no fun. But Ba-Ba always found her fast. He was really good at hide and seek. Lyra was still too young to realize that running about and giggling was a dead giveaway to your hiding place, especially if Ba-Ba made her laugh by pretending he couldn't find her. She really wanted to play with the pretty mirror... Maybe if she played hide and seek with Ba-Ba first he would let her play with the pretty mirror later. Or if not, maybe she could sneak into Ba-Ba's room and just look at it without him knowing...
