Sure the RP began to slow a little at the time of the collabs, but that's to be expected. I wouldn't say the RP almost died because of it. As for KoL's decision? You have no one but the people who are contributing to the lack of activity to blame. While it may seem unfair, the GM simply did what they could to salvage the RP in the way they thought was best. If you're complaining about the fact that the pre-planned teams didn't quite work out, take that with the people not contributing. Not us.
