[@Sep] Well, some other common threads are that they're both men of science; they're both the product of freak accidents and not gods, royalty, or chosen last sons; they both fight a motley of eccentric, colorful criminals who are largely harmless crooks with the occasional true psychopath; they're both defined, at least in some part, by the women in their lives.

But mostly, I just like 'em.
