Hell, if the first JLA movie had happened it would've been right around the first Avengers movie's time (maybe before) if I recall correctly... but Nolan wasn't playing ball and other factors made the project die out.

DC don't need the Justice League to compete. Characters like Superman (Through an unfiltered lens preferably), Batman, Flash, Wonder Woman and I [i]suppoooose[/i] Aquaman could have made money on their own. Even if they released the films within a year or so (Which is possible for big studio films such as WB) to bring the Justice League about faster, it would have been better than shoehorning as many people in to one movie as possible without any explanation.

We went into the first Avengers, and comic background or no. You knew exactly who Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk were. If you were paying attention you even knew Widow and Hawkeye.
