Well I see it as saying seeing yourself in someone doesn't mean they're the same thing.  Darren just sees the sort of pissy attitude she has, only more subtle compared to him.  Its more having an attitude of superiority, which doesn't help considering where they are and have (Not in a good place and not a hell of a lot respectably)

Though he wouldn't be very outward about all that to her.  He really isn't the preachy type.  I'm sure though she has made fun of him a time or 12 though.

Yeah when you had them as friends I could see it, Darren has started being fairly easy going so him and Allison make a smart friendship considering.  At some point he should teach her how to surf.
