I feel like there should be a third definition of intelligent thought.

Somewhere in between non-sentient and sentient, there should be a [i]servant[/i] intellect where the creature doesn't exist for itself, or has any type of self-awareness, but rather functions under a god's whim. For example, Toun's Fortress, or the Muses (in a very technical manner.)
