I'd just make him appear normal. Nothing special, nothing that screams 'STAY AWAY, HATRED AND EVIL INCARNATE.' Make his villainy, his [i]vileness[/i] in his actions, not his looks. 

I'd make him undeniably mortal and/or human/Hain/Rovaick/whateverthehellmortalrace. So that people have to realize, this man could easily be any one of them. He [i]is[/i] one of them.
