Living in fire...Well, idk who I am to tell you guys what your guardians do when they're not floating around as beautiful butterflies o.o Just to make a suggestion though, if (from what I know) you're going for the whole darkness & decay deal, wouldn't it make more sense if they travel between the shadows? Otherwise, I really have no issue with it

2)Just to keep with the whole [u]"spirit" ghost thing"[/u] idea, I wanna say they are ethereal-phantom things...but... I don't want to contradict myself and make the "evil spirits" tangible beings because the humans will pretty much be the vessel to be able to use the abilites. You really put me in a sticky situation! xD How about we say they can be both? haha
