So, it's come to my attention that I really don't appreciate poetry, and this is a problem because I plan on participating in certain contests in which poetry crops up, and community votes are involved, etc. This means I have a natural bias towards narratives > poetry, and it's pretty much because I'm ignorant about what makes good poetry. Help me change this. I want to know what to look for when reading poetry; moreover, I want to know what are good ways to read poetry. And what will make it more enjoyable overall? And what will help me appreciate the work that goes into making it (short of writing a bunch of poetry myself which I may do one day anyway to shore up my own weaknesses as a writer)? If you have any advice, I am all ears.
