Same thing happened with Evangelion. He doesn't have the same mind set he did when he first started. The man beyond the original FSN, which had some bone chilling shit (I still shiver thinking of that one scene from a random woman's perspective as Zouken's worm's descend on her and she begs for a death that was agonizingly far off but she still has to go through every second of it. And in the end he walks off with her skin as the Grail War spins further out of control.) 

Now though he's already hit gold and can just rehash till it stops selling. Don't need to reach deep for any emotional depth when you copy what already worked.
