Glancing over to the other two talking at the table, she slipped her pink-cased phone into her hand and checked the new message curiously.
From Belle: To Everyone: Dibs. I call dibs. I called them first. She’s riding with me.
Melrose stared at the text message for a few moments. Someone was already so eager to ride with her? Well, at least it was another woman - that she couldn't complain about. Though with her chances, it was just an overly friendly part of the group - like that one friend who wanted to make friend with everyone and saw Rose as a potential new 'girlfriend' to chat about boys about - oh how wrong that was going to be! Still, it made her feel a little bit more comfortable. Though soon enough, another text came in, this time to her privately.
From Alex: To Rose: You can ride with me if you want.
For a moment, all Rose could do is tilt her head in thought and be thankful the poor guy wasn't right in front of her as a wash of expressions crossed her face. Mostly, she felt uncomfortable by the private invitation by Alex. Without knowing if he was just naive or trying to pull a fast one, there was no way in hell she was jumping in a car with a guy - alone. For her safety and sanity, she assumed no one else was going to be riding with Alex. It only took a split second after that to decide that her response would be a flat no. She didn't want to be mean though, but even the idea of riding with a super friendly, boy-gossiping girl was a million times more preferable.
To Alex: From Rose: Belle apparently has 'dibs' on me already. Thanks for the offer though!
Sure her thoughts were a bit more blunt, like, 'no thanks, I don't want to ride with a guy alone - even if I did like guys,' but she wanted to be nice. Who knows, maybe he really was just trying to be nice? It was a sweet, but definitely naive gesture in her mind - they were strangers after all.
