I do think it is a little silly that a particular weapon does more damage than another.. I think it is not the weapon but the wielder that determines the power and efficiency in it's use..  Even the most powerful magical weapon cannot compensate it's wielder for their lack  of talent or efficiency. That is what it means to be proficient with a weapon. 
I can not advocate this system but i'll go with it... every game has it's rules no matter how silly What if i use a long sword and a dagger.. then i get slashing damage and if i use it it could be piercing damage as well(if that is allowed)
