I usually only use phrases like that when I want to illustrate how stupid they are.
Not sure if it's any better, but my brother owns a dog which has a high-pitched bark that sounds more like a yelp.
It was funny the first time we heard it, but the dog's got brain damage and has a tendency to start barking at anything and everything that it's scared off... which ranges from the silhouette of plants at night, to it's own shadow during the day. >_> Think every neighbor on the street has complained at least once.
