Also, the chances of bandits coming anywhere near even the outskirts of Gobi seems very implausible. They would have had to either take the tunnel or climb the cliffs and valleys that make up the "wall" around the village. Since no one really knows that the village is even there, they would have no reason to go through the trouble of climbing cliffs and/or valleys and if they would have taken the tunnel, they would have "come out" in the middle of the village and would have had to get past the "guard" at the "gate", who would likely have alerted the entire village.

I changed the years he lived in the village - now closer to half a decade than the year and a half he had previously. I rewrote quite a bit of his backstory, plus I further anchored him in the village, both with a girlfriend and prolonging his time he's spent in the village. 

Fair enough. Anyway he'd be able to work outside of the tunnel? The village has outside trade, right? So there'd definitely be work for him as a carpenter / construction worker to do, and bandits assaulting traders or something like that outside of the village would be plausible, no?
