As if the school had pre-decorated the rooms to each student's liking, even though they have no obvious way of knowing what it is the students would like. Say, they use a bedspread in their favourite colour or whatever. Just enough to make the student pause and think "Wait, how did they know that?"

As for your second question, I think I mentioned that they were flown in if they were too far away for ground travel. In your case she was probably brought in on the train or in a private vehicle.
