Let's just say that without nukes you'd be most likely would never see personal computers and we'd never get this online discussion to begin with. The research which also resulted in nukes is essential for the development of the world. Rather than being stupid and enact the modern world version of Fantasy Gun Control why not give an explanation how the world is not steering towards the Cold War? Especially since the 50s was infamous for the so-called "Pentomic Doctrine" which meant pretty much everyone and their dear grandmother was to be equipped with nuclear weapons. Thank Kennedy it never happened (and the fact it was a rather crazy plan to begin with).
If all nations are afraid to face retribution the moment they deploy bombs like the Fat Man not to mention large thermonuclear warheads then suddenly the interest to make nukes would pretty much vanish. It'd be a crazy thing to work on, and something which is bound to end up in failure.
So yeah, rather than digging your head into the sand and pretending that nukes don't exist I went for a more forceful yet logical route. You can make nukes but there's no point since using even one of these can have rather terrible consequences. Not on the enemy, on yourself. Courtesy to the kill sats.
