[@Inkdrop] Personally, I'd rather have the catastrophe be a complete wipe far in the past and now instead of declaring magic we're studying old tech and learning it's secrets.  Like, ICs would be primitive and rare at this point but we would be able to understand the theory behind them due to studying past examples.
