None of this is to say you can't touch the subject of course. There is a context you could potentially use to create movements like gay liberation in PoW. The social circumstances of northern Europe haven't been expanded on very much beyond Britain. As we have alluded to, a lot of the governments of Europe are antiquated and brittle. With Spain and Britain making power plays in Africa whilst China looks to be swallowing Russia, social tension in the rest of Europe would be tense. The gay underground has been around for centuries, so we'd assume it is present in PoW, and if social tensions get explosive in continental Europe then a spirit of political radicalism and near-revolutionary sentiments could create a gay rights movement in the same way the civil rights movement and the radicalism of the sixties brought about the gay lib movement.
While we're on the subject of the underground gay scene: did you know the Ottoman and North African world was the DeFacto mecca for European gays? As I read European literati used to travel to places like Tunis or Egypt where there was a public openness towards homosexuality, or more so than Europe. And also porking young boys in the butt, but that's another thing. I don't know how relevant that antiquated piece of information would be at the end of the day though, since that would have been over a century ago. But if I were to imagine a PoW-contemporary underground gay scene in Europe then I'd imagine hangers-on trappings of Orientalism.
