It now occurs to me that the whole mess hall bit might've been meant as a chance for everyone to get to know each other better. If that is indeed the case then i'm sorry for not having my character go along with that, I just figured that since most of his story and personality hinged on his nature boy attitude that it would make more sense for him to get out and about as soon as he possibly could.
