Not necessarily.  :)   Once we're done with the current island, we'll move on to the next.  [@Marcus XVI] is going to GM that one.   

So 3 options, I think.

1 - Your character has simply been on the ship during the current adventure.  
2 - S/he's a resident of Avery's Isle.
3 - Work something out with Marcus XVI to introduce a new character on the next island.  

1 & 2 would let you join in now if you're willing to skim the current story.
