A naturally charismatic and charming smooth-talker, specializing in Jedi mind tricks over skill with a lightsaber. Although he is no longer a slimy, double-crosing, no-good swindler, he does maintain some of these scoundrelous tendencies, making more than a few members of the Jedi Order feel rather uneasy. Biography: Born and raised on "The Smuggler's Moon," Nar Shaddaa, it seemed as though it was Deak Ducain's destiny to be a slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler. After losing his parents at a young age, Deak was forced to look out for himself, falling into a life of crime in order to get by. Theft, extortion, spice dealing, illegal swoop racing, all were par for the course on Nar Shaddaa, and Deak quickly learned the skills he would need in order to survive. Nar Shaddaa was a lot of things, but a good place to gorw up was not one of them. Deak began working for a powerful criminal organization known as the Exchange, and before long he became one of their most trusted smugglers. Deak found that he had a certain flair for the profession, as he was quite a smooth-talker and an unusually skilled pilot. During this time he even acquired his own freighter, the Scavenger, which he used to carry out missions for the Exchange throughout the galaxy. The Exchange ultimately became the closest thing he had to family. In the world of smugglers and crime lords, the best policy is not to trust anybody, and Deak would soon learn this the hard way. He discovered that his father had several unpaid debts with the Exchange, and that the Exchange was reponsible for the death of his parents as a result. Feeling betrayed, Deak sought out the bounty hunter responsible for killing his parents, in order to exact revenge. Deak swore he would bring down the entire Exchange if he had to, but little did he know that an operation was already in place aiming to do just that. A Jedi Knight named Kai-Voth was conducting an undercover mission within the ranks of the Exchange, covertly passing information to Republic authorities and the Jedi Council. During the mission, Kai-Voth's cover was blown and he was discovered by Deak, who agreed to help him take down the Exchange from within. Voth was amazed at Deak's connection to the Force, observing his quick reflexes, abilitity to manipulate others, and knack for survival. Voth sensed that there was more to Deak that just the smuggler he had become, and that if trained he could become a powerful Jedi. However, for Deak to pursue training as a Jedi, he would need to pass an important test. Deak and Voth cornered the bounty hunter that killed Deak's parents on Nar Shaddaa, and Deak was faced with a choice. Execute the man or have him brought in to face Republic justice for his many crimes. Deak could not bring himself to murder and unarmed prisoner and chose the latter as a result, passing the test that Voth had intended. After taking down a prominent Exchange crime lord on Nar Shaddaa, Voth was awarded the rank of Jedi Master. He brought Deak before the Jedi on Coruscant, and asked to take him on as an apprentice. His request was granted. Deak was trained in the ways of the Force by Master Kai-Voth, and he was taught to harness and control his natural abilities. During this time, the Mandalorian Wars broke out, and the Jedi found themselves in the midst of a rift as Revan began to rally Jedi Knights to his cause. Deak felt somewhat conflicted regarding the Jedi's non-inteventionalist position, but he ultimately chose to remain loyal to the Jedi and to his Master that had done so much for him. However, upon the completion of his training, Deak was given a mission that would prove critical to the Mandalorian Wars. Master Kai-Voth revealed that he was a member of the Jedi Shadows, a hidden sect of Jedi the general public was unaware of, carrying out highly-sensitive, top-secret missions. This was the reason he was sent undercover into the Exchange. Master Voth believed that Deak had all of the qualities necessary to become a Jedi Shadow, and distinguish himself from the other members of the Order. For his first mission, Deak was to be sent undercover into the ranks of Revan's supporters, and report information back to the Jedi. Deak's loyalities would soon be tested in more ways than he could possibly imagine...
