TL;DR Summary: - Nation RP - Modern era, 1959 or so. Height of the Cold Wa. - There is a larger world, but most of your focus will be on one region of it; other nations have great influence, however. Those are NPC's controlled by the GM. - You are playing a developing-world nation in a region of many nations of similar stature, a mish-mash of post-colonial governments struggling to develop economically, militarily and in every other way. - There are superpowers, but they are NPC's...your nations will be courting them for advantage and support. Yes, you have to toady up to some, vilify the others to toady up, and perhaps try to play one against the other. - There is an international organization, but it is mostly a debating society. However, nations do have a chance to form their own alliances and international forums. Alternatively, we might create a regional organization where lots of arguing happens (see King Juan Carlos of Spain and President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela for pointers.) - Tongue in cheek humor -- if you can't roll with the shambolic nature of the setting, and feel this need to act out your ideal political systems in this, it's probably not the RP for you. You should be trying to make the nation somewhat amusing. The words "Football War" should be ingrained in your mind. Similarly, military power will be limited -- you're all using surplus weaponry. Toadying for access to more modern systems to one-up your neighbor, of course, is part of it. - It's best if you at least watch "Moon over Parador" or play "Tropico" to get the gist of the humor. This RP –is- about humor, not about military conquest. - Militaries and major industries/natural resources are generated randomly. - Amusing trait system for the leader with lots of unintended consequences! - This is not the RP for you if you want a big awesome war. War is likely to be black comedy in this RP, full of ineptitude and disaster. - We're in advanced, but look, this is meant to be a quick post RP. Don't spend a lot of time writing your responses or figuring out the best strategy. This is a bit more off the cuff than that. Table of Contents: - Information about the RP will be posted here. - Sheets Thread - The character sheet template is here. Bear in mind that some stats are rolled randomly by me -- that is to say, everything people like to minimax in a normal NRP. :)
In Character Info: - It is the back yard of the great powers, a producer of all sorts of agricultural products and now, with the discovery of useful natural resources, a place to vie for and struggle over. With so many leaders of so many nations, the question is if the region manages to stabilize itself despite the various interests trying to destabilize it or if it will fall apart in pieces. Will these small nations bootstrap themselves to stability and psoperity through good leadership, or will they squabble themselves into ruin? Only time will tell.

Out of Character Info: - Basically, this nation RP is a development of other nation RP's that I've attempted, but with a twist. I was trying to do a Cold War RP, but I kept emphasizing that people should limit their power and play regional powers. I realized the biggest fun of the first RP was that we had former colonial powers and post-colonial powers and the such all backbiting each other and decided to expand on that...while perhaps trying to aim for a little more 'dictator' humor. I realize that, in most cases, dictatorships aren't funny, but I am going almost more for the comic parody of banana republics than anything. As a result, the nations are all set in a region, neighbors of one another and exist in a world of competing superpowers that view them as proxies. These nations may have a common heritage, but it's also entirely possible they speak different languages and have different attitudes imparted upon them as a result of who colonized them first. One of the things I intend to do is have NPC nation profiles written up so that you know who to base your nations on -- that creates a sense of cohesion in the RP to begin with. I suppose that the last attempt I made at a nation RP, I felt a bit alienated by things. As a result, I want to make it clear that while the RP involves rivalries and venal, corrupt, ambitious leaders screwing each other (and their people) over. I don't want people to clog up the OOC arguing, so I intend to establish my final arbiter authority from the outset; if someone has a problem with someone else's character sheet, they MUST PM me, rather than go public about it on the thread and turn it into a big argument. I suppose I can say that I've learned my lesson from my last Nation RP. That said, politeness, sense of humor and basically having fun are the most important elements of this RP. I'm setting the time period in 1959 or so; the superpowers may be deploying jet fighters, but the banana republics are still a couple decades behind.
