It runs from the embryo-machine to the internal lining of the uterus, same as a normal umbilical cord. The 'placenta' on the interior of the uterus is living matter transplanted from Jvan, it just happens to be separate from the rest of her body.

Not that it wouldn't be hilarious for Galbar's first space elevator to be an umbilicus stretched out like a reverse bungee cord.
