She heard rumors about a sickly boy who made a huge discovery in mathematics by watching the flies moved. Expectantly, she gazed upwards, looking for something similar to happen. "Reason one hundred sixty seven to leave this place…” Mara muttered softly as she averted her gaze, glancing at the clock. A pang of alarm went through her when she not only read the time, but realized what it meant. On the day she would finally be able to leave this rural town, she overslept. Her parents would never let her hear the end of this, she realized with dismay! Jumping out of bed, she quickly got dressed, putting on a respectable black and white blouse, partnered with black jeans and boots. After running a comb through her hair, Mara slid her skull pin neatly into place, and grabbed her small backpack of belongings. Hesitating over a picture of her dear friends, she shook her head, and left it behind. She’d have no need for it on the road ahead — there was too much to see, too much to do, too much to learn! She wouldn’t have time to reminisce on old friendships! Besides, it was highly unlikely that Rob or Christine would ever return to Dewmeadow. Dashing down the stairs, Mara pushed open the large french doors of her home, hardly sparing her parents a second thought. They’d already said their goodbyes the night before, and predictably, her father had attempted to persuade her to pursue a more sensible career. Mara had heard nothing of it, already dreaming of the sights out in the world to see. She raced her way towards Professor Dogwood’s laboratory, kicking up small clouds of dust from the dirt that she disturbed. Laughing a bit, she couldn’t help but see the irony—at the same time that she was kicking up dust, water struck her jeans, time and time again! Entirely out of breath, ages seemed to have past by the time she arrived at the laboratory. She had hardly given any attention to everyone she passed—they were all boring, people she already knew. They had nothing new to offer her—no new tales and stories! She’d known each and every one of them since she was small. The familiarity drove her insane—she wanted something new, something strange, something better! Stopping in front of the door, she quickly glanced at the other two would-be trainers. She knew Rowan, and frowned a bit with disappointment. Why they couldn’t have had new people coming, she didn’t know… Sure, Dewmeadow was rural and out of the way but… She sighed, attempting not to look at the blonde haired child with disdain. It wasn’t his fault that they’d known each other for years, even if he was three years her younger. As she avoided Rowan’s gaze, she caught the eye of the stranger, and a smile broke out on her face. However, she quickly bit her tongue, glancing down at the ground before looking up once again with all the courage she could muster. ”Where did you come from?” Mara asked bluntly, hardly caring who would enter the laboratory first. There was someone new in her small town of Dewmeadow. She looked at him like a puzzle, waiting to be solved and then tossed away once completed. Things were finally becoming interesting.
