This will be a 5e D&D game.
This is the... fourth? game i'll have DM'd, and the second group. Therefor, i'm not the most experienced, and there are a dozen and one things i need to work on, some i know about, some i don't. That said, if you feel that i could change my approach during the game then feel free to speak up, i'm always ready to hear criticism to become a better DM.

As i said in the preface, we'll be using the fifth edition, as it's the only edition i have any experience with. The setting will be one of my own creation, and i'll say this now: You'll be starting in a jail cell, so naturally, you won't have much (if any) equipment (at least, on your body that is.) I'll allow some rolls to happen at the beginning to see if you were able to smuggle something small into the jail cell with you. An arcane focus, a couple coins, etc. Given the name of the forum, and the experience i'm sure at least most of you will have, i don't know if i need to say this, but my current group has problems with it so i'm going to say it anyway. I'll be pushing for roleplay. Like, instead of saying "I attack the goblin" go "With one fluid motion, (charactername) draws his sword and brings it to bear across the goblin's chest." Also, since we're in a forum, feel free to continue through with a series of rolls without waiting for my affirmation. The most common example i could think of would be an attack. Instead of rolling your to-hit and then waiting for me to tell you if you hit, roll the to-hit and the damage at the same time. If you don't hit, i'll say so when i post next, and i'll ignore your damage roll. As for homebrew rules, i only have one. This rule may change during the game, but if it does, i'll announce so so everyone knows. 1.) When you strike in unarmed combat, (and hit) it becomes a contest, the attacker's Strength vs the defender's constitution. If the attacker beats the defender's constitution by 10 the defender is knocked prone, if the attacker beats the defender's constitution by 15, the defender is knocked unconscious. Elsewise, the 1 damage is dealt, and nothing happens.

Your characters will begin as fresh prisoners in a dungeon owned by the new king, who has enacted a number of new laws. Chiefly amoung them, he has outlawed the use of magic, and has ordered the extermination of all non-human beings. Elves, Dwarves, and other sentient races of which have a nation are the exception due to the threat of war. Regardless, these creatures still mysteriously go missing now and then, slowly, but surely.

Be it for thievery, the unlawful use of magic, your genetics, or whatever reason, you find yourself trapped in a freshly made cell. The floor, ceiling and three walls are made of roughly hewn rock, carved out of the mountain. The bars on the fourth wall show no sign of wear, looking as if they'd just come out of the smithy's, and the room can fit nine standing humanoids comfortably. The stench is palpable, giving evidence to the fact that while the cell may be new, the dungeon itself, and the prisoners held within, are not. Faintly, the sound of a dozen picks against stone can be heard between the brief recesses of the screams of the tortured and damned. Others stay in the cell with you, namely, a frail but young man, huddled in the corner. He wears the rags of a prisoner, as do you, and hasn't said a thing since you arrived.
