If he could get one the size of a quarterstaff, then he can use [url=http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/shillelagh.htm]Shillelagn[/url] to provide the magic. Granted the spell calls for an oak staff, but I hope you'll be lenient and allow any staffs of any sort of wooden material. Maybe sharpen or narrow an end for stabbing ala makeshift spear. And sure, while a wooden staff isn't useful against most types of enemies, that's what the great axe is for. The staff would be reserved for vampire slaying.
