Well with that in mind there is the more powerful route
Or the scientst route
Or the dark supernatural route

There is always the flexibility of waiting and thinking

I will leave a side note that I do have a rather powerful character coming in much later who would be an extreme game changer if one of the more extreme scientst hate groups got a hold of him
He will be introduced much later but if you want to make it interesting 
There is the route of spy. Someone whom is against scientists trying to work from the inside out to destroy them...they would have to work their way up and try to figure out whom the game changer is. Which would take quite some time

I am also still developing the whole plot line for that game changer so if spy route is taken it will take a very very large amount of time.
