The way it's built into her original kind of species is that she's like. A ghost who needs to absorb human life to maintain a corporeal and tangible form, otherwise she's trapped in limbo and can't really accomplish her goals. So... she eats people. 

* The reason I likened her to Hannibal though, is that she's... very showy about killing people who have wronged her. One D&D session she crashed a hoity toity upperclass party by traipsing down from the rafters using one of the host's army men as part of the trapeze. It was the best subsequent roll of 20s I'd ever gotten honestly.
