Everyone's IC has some mention of how Coal was being a brat and now I'm gonna shame myself and Coal for all eternity.

Then again in the end Jaklo just doesn't want to end up carrying back a body more than anything. Coal appears terribly unprepared and if nothing else he pities the kid. He pities the fact that something has driven him at 17 to run off and try to join W&R. At the same time he is entirely ready to hold Coal accountable if someone else got hurt.

And to be honest with my slight more control over Markiel and Seph I feel like Coal was allowed in because they saw how desperate he was as well as his potential. There were a hundred ways the kid could go including not making it and going rogue. Seph had hunted down his fair share of mages who used their talents for wrongdoing, but even he's not sure if he could kill a kid.
