I based it off of a few combinations done from different lores I've read
One would be a book where there was water and fire elemental salamanders that were hand sized and used to send messages
Another would be the limited lore I found online saying that they are elemental a and 'of fire' 
The last would be the idea I have of a humanoid versus a non humanoid. 

If the salamander does not live in the castle they would live outside of it and be considered a high ranking peasent.
Basically, I am covering every possible bit of salamander lore I can think of and combining them into the two types. (Three if you count water...they tend to not be humanoid and only in the rivers)

Everything I have read has said they are summer only
