As she walked down the street, the sounds of her footfalls reverberated off of the sidewalk, a lonely cacophony that drowned out her thoughts as she made her way back to the Lost Haven University campus. She had left Lost Haven nearly a month ago, traveling to Baltimore to follow up on a lead on exactly what had murdered her mother. She had also hoped to learn more about the Dark Possessed, the evil entities which she had been trained from childhood to combat. Sadly, information on what had killed her mother had been scarce. What was worse, she had learned that the Dark Possessed were little more than common demons, which flew in the face of everything that she had been taught from the time she was 10 years old. The revelation had left her stunned and feeling rather hollow. While battling demons was a worthy cause, she was always led to believe that she was following a larger calling. It was not that calling, however, that brought Adeline Strayer back to Lost Haven. When she had heard about the threat posed to the city by the terrorists of the Pax Metahumana group, she knew that she needed to come back, she knew that Kyle would need her. Though she had cut off communication with Kyle when she left the city, she still thought about him often, and feared for his safety. So she returned to Lost Haven, hoping to offer her assistance. However, she had not been able to reach him. She had heard rumors that a group of super heroes had banded together to stop the threat, and she could only hope that he was one of them. As she approached the campus, Adeline hoped that her former roommate Emily might be able to tell her about what was going on in the city since the threat had been levied against the city, and that perhaps, she had heard from Kyle at some point during this mess. As she walked, she suddenly became aware that she was not alone after all. Someone, or something was following her. At first, she thought that perhaps the interloper was one of the demons that her people had called the Dark Possessed, however, she soon realized that whoever the stranger was, it was not one of the black eyed wraiths. In the distance, she could hear something moving in the shadows, and then after several beats, she heard a growl. Suddenly, the cold grip of fear washed over Adeline, a shiver ran down her spine, and she got a glimpse of something in her periphery. Whatever it was, it was large, and seemed to move impossibly fast. Adeline knew that she was in over her head, and quickened her pace, hoping to reach the campus before she came face to face with whatever it was that was stalking her. Adeline made her way to the end of the street, and took a corner which brought her within a block of the campus, and froze in terror at what she saw standing in front of her. Before she could react, her attacker assaulted her with a flurry of it’s clawed hand, slicing through the soft flesh of her arms and torso. Adeline tried to run, but her attacker was all over her, pinning her to the ground and continuing to rip at her flesh with it’s claws and teeth. Adeline screamed out in pain as the beast sank its teeth into her shoulder, then the beast reared back ran its claws across her neck and tearing her throat out with one swift motion. Then as quickly as the attack had begun, it was over. The beast was gone, leaving Adeline to bleed out on the sidewalk. As she lay dying, off in the distance she could hear the beast which had attacked her crying out with a primal howl, which was the last thing she heard as her world went dark.
