Indie means a comic from Dark Horse, IDW, Image, etc. aka not made by Marvel/DC's staple characters.

I'm fine with that, though I'd prefer the number of TF on Earth to be low as to not overrun the rest of the characters.

No, they have to be canon characters. There's a Create-a-Hero game for creating your own character
