Please be inventive with the ship side of things. While we are in the early days of gunpowder usage, I imagine life in a world with a sea full of huge and dangerous monsters has led to inventive ship designs. No need to limit yourself too much renaissance tech, that's just meant to be a rough marker of where we are.
