I'd say that your char's concept can stay. Machinery covers enough that you won't be intruding into Metalworking, Masonry, etc, that you will have a fight with a god or such. Machinery can be seen as a combination or seperate, since ancient cranes, siege engines, and the like aren't necessarily to any one portfolio previously mentioned.

In fact, your demi is most likely to come into their own when we start getting into gunpowder(or such things), or the industrial age.
