They had met on a Merchant Ship, and bonded over a love of adventure. They saved up their salaries and bought themselves a ship. They became wanderers, though the two children they had were both born on the Citadel. While Declan and his older sister spent quite a bit of time on the Citadel, most of their time was spent gallivanting around with their parents. Declan has little memory of this time, basing most of what he knew on his sister’s stories. This relatively happy time came to a screeching halt when the Citadel fell. Declan’s family’s ship was docked at the Station. Declan and his sister were inside, while their parents had gone inside to talk with a friend before leaving. His sister was looking through one of the ships windows when she spotted the approaching Devastator fleet. She panicked and used limited knowledge of the ship to flee. Declan was four, his sister was ten. Declan and his sister had survived the destruction of the Citadel, but their parent hadn’t. They were sent to live with their father’s parents on Mars. They attended school, made friends, and generally lived like normal children. They both suffered from severe Survivor’s Guilt and wanted to find some way to ease that. They both joined the Military the hour Deck turned 18. Declan received some medical training, and his sister went into engineering. They both ended up being assigned to the same ship, the Serpentis. After two years of patrolling the system, the ship suffered a crippling mechanical failure which resulted in three lower-deck explosions. Declan was just outside the blast zone of one of those explosions. He still suffered a shrapnel-borne cut above his eye and a ruptured eardrum. His sister was killed instantly. Despite these factors, Declan acted with remarkable calm, treating the wounded while crewmen were evacuated. Official records state that he saved thirty lives that day. When he had healed from his wounds, he was rapidly promoted from Private and awarded a place on the Vitae.
Code Word:Pineapples
