Well, as I said. It can happen naturally ICly as I have some things planned to get the characters together and get them moving to one of two beginning areas, each with their own little beginning quest to motivate them onwards. Each 'quest' though, will only allow for four people to take it with the way I'm going to have it happen. So, it'd sort of be whichever four decides to take the quest first ICly if we go that route.

Of course, your character might not want to help with the quest at all - I can easily come up with proper motivation for them to get going, though if I need too, if they simply wouldn't venture forth on their own.

Or, If you want, you can all discuss OOCly which characters you think would work good together and go from there.

Lastly, if all of you want me too, I can pair the characters up myself.

I'll be getting some lore up on either of the two beginning areas soon in the CS tab that your characters would likely easily know about. The locations of which, would likely draw some of your characters to them more than the other. As far as barring it from being somewhat uneven to begin with, well, I suppose it could. That's why I said hopefully would be an even 4/4 split. I can easily adjust for whatever, if I need too.
