[@NarcissisticPotato]Just do what you want, I gave my character a dark story line because I wanted to have a character with a dark past who joined for a different reason than others. I always thought it made little sense for characters to just decide to be good and make atonement for what they've done as though the indoctrination was so simply broken. Holden is here because he fears the atrophy of his soul, not because he wants to be a hero. He wishes to learn if he has a purpose, that's it. He desires to change on a fundamental level, to experience what he is and what it means to be him. Quite honestly, I'm perfectly fine if he should go down the path of villainy. Anyway, my point is, do whatever you want. Your character won't be defined by their backstory, diversity comes from present action not past deeds. It might be a fun challenge for you to make a name for yourself and be different from all the rest, right?

Ehhh I'm stuck on whether to make a dark background or just have a normal background for my character! Dx Dark backgrounds are a little overdone but it would probably be pretty cool!
I personally think it depends on your character and their personality. For instance, Kouki's character wants to find a purpose and all that, so his dark past serves as a push in the direction of SHIELD for such a character. But in another case, my character, Guy Lee, has a characterization that honestly would just want to be a hero because he thinks it's cool af and he has no motivating reasons behind it except that he has a cool power for doing something stupid. So i gave him a more lighthearted background, especially since a dark backstory definitely wouldn't suit Guy (though his mother did die, everything worked out fineeee). So I think you should consider: does your character having a dark backstory flesh the character out and make them more 3 dimensional or would it be unnecessary drama and your character would be just as fine with a lighthearted backstory? Note: it's not always the backstory that makes a character special ^_^
