well the first thing you have to do is you have to kill your wife. 

But seriously, the first thing you gotta do is decide what type of roleplaying you want to do. Second thing is you got to identify what you like about what others are doing and then rip them off. You learn by copying what everyone else is doing and then co-opting that for your own imagination. 

Which is to say that the best way to improve is to practice by joining and keeping up with roleplays, and watch what everyone else is doing.
