US troops actually did pretty badly in the beginning of the European Front, it may have been North Africa though it is hard to recall, they had severely lost their first battle as they were not hardened by war. Not to mention, it was actually the Russians that saved Europe, them doing quite the number on German troops.

I understand you were however during WW1 the germans were never in North Africa. As for the US. They brought in fresh troops,tanks and more to help the entente win. The Russians by the end of the war were dealing with a revolution by the bolsheviks and had made a separate peace with the germans.
