[@Dark Wind] -- I read that one right after Ep III; both were part of the "Dark Lord Trilogy" along with a second Luceno book. I firmly believe that they should not have bundled Luceno's novels around Stover's. That did no favors to Luceno, like, at all. Not that they were bad books, but they felt ... much more perfunctory than Stover's. Like he was going through the motions without necessarily being invested in what he was writing. Much less ... present, engaged, as if he couldn't really picture anything he wrote about. It made his books more of a struggle than a breezy pleasure.
